This substantial renovation and addition started with the owners' wish to use unused upper-floor space as their bedroom, allowing each of their two young children to have their own room, and to expand a small kitchen. The new floor plan created a kitchen centered on a central island, a breakfast nook with built-in cabinetry, and a master suite with a home office, walk-in closet, and a small balcony with views to the bay. The design of the exterior sought to cre- ate a clearer architectural presence through gabled roof forms and centered windows with traditional muntin patterns. Additional attic insulation, a high-efficiency furnace, and low-VOC paint were part of the renovation.
